Not only did she rarely smile, she looked almost frightened, or distraught, like someone worried she forgot to lock the front door of her mansion.

Again, vocally speaking, Hill was on point throughout, turning in top-notch takes on hits like "This Kiss," "The Way You Love Me" and the stunning '70s soft-rock retread "Let Me Let Go." But once McGraw launched into his set with "Real Good Man," the energy shift in the room was palpable — and it wasn't solely due to McGraw's circulation-strangling jeans. This guy knows a thing or two about command. He's talked about pursing a second career in politics and, at least in terms of personal magnetism, he'd be tough to beat.

McGraw looked a wee bit thicker around the middle than the last time he was in St. Paul for a sold-out X gig in the fall of 2004. But he hasn't lost any of his swagger. And his hit "Live Like You Were Dying" has taken on nearly epic status, earning some of the heartiest screams of the evening.

Odd staging gave the duets an awkward feel. During the show opener and the pair of songs midway through the evening, Hill and McGraw performed with their backs to each other, with her powerful vocals threatening to overtake his. It wasn't until the end of the night that the two actually gazed upon each other and, for a brief moment, McGraw melted Hill's icy façade.
