While billed as a co-headlining gig, it was abundantly clear Friday night that he's the more potent star of the couple's Soul2Soul II tour, which opened its two-night stand at the Xcel Energy Center in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 18,000.

The pair opened the show singing their current hit "Like We Never Loved at All," followed by more than an hour of solo Hill, two more duets, an hour of McGraw and another handful of shared tunes to wrap up the night.

Technically, the evening was a state-of-the-art show performed on an in-the-round stage with four catwalks that extended into the crowd. With barely a pause, Hill and McGraw spent 2½ hours on the stage, which lit up like Times Square.

Hill, however, seemed overwhelmed by it all. To be certain, she's got a terrific, if somewhat plain, voice that's perfectly suited to her middle-of-the-road country/pop. But the massive, flashy and empty catwalks only amplified the slow moments of her often dull performance.
