Boos for Tim McGraw
Tim McGraw's new song "My Old Friend" doesn't mention war or anything remotely political. But on Sunday at Xcel Center, the country superstar dedicated "Friend" to an old friend who is an Army chaplain and who provided photos from the war zone that were used as a backdrop during the concert. After the song, the St. Paul crowd started chanting "USA, USA, USA."This is turning into a Toby Keith concert," McGraw joked, but that comment drew unexpected boos. "Or a Dixie Chicks concert," McGraw countered. The crowd booed even louder. "Oh, c'mon," said McGraw, clearly taken aback. "You just said 'USA.' " Even the apolitical McGraw knows that the First Amendment applies equally to Republicans and Democrats. ~ Jon Bream, Star Tribune, October 1, 2004 |
